자주 묻는 질문
How much can I import from Korea duty-free?
It depends on your country. The USA has the most generous threshold at $800 FOB (item price only, shipping not included). Japan is around $67 CIF (item + shipping). The EU has no duty de minimis for VAT but a EUR 150 threshold for customs duty. Australia and Singapore have no de minimis — all imports face GST. Always check your country's current rules before ordering.
Does the shipping cost count toward the de minimis?
It depends on the country. Countries using the CIF (Cost + Insurance + Freight) basis include the item price AND shipping in the threshold calculation — Japan, EU, UK, Australia, Canada, and most Asian countries use CIF. The USA uses FOB (item price only), so even expensive express shipping does not push you over the $800 threshold.
Is there customs duty on K-pop albums and photocards?
Most K-pop albums are classified as printed matter or optical media (CDs), which carry a 0% duty rate in Japan and low rates (0–5%) in many other countries. Lightsticks and fan kits may face higher duty (5–20%) as miscellaneous manufactured goods. The actual rate depends on how customs classifies your specific item.
I already paid VAT at checkout — will I be charged again at the border?
If you bought from a seller registered in your country's VAT/GST scheme (e.g., Weverse Shop for Australia, Singapore, or the UK), the VAT was collected at checkout and you should not be charged again at the border. However, if you buy from a non-registered seller, customs may collect the VAT upon arrival. Check your order confirmation for any VAT line items.
Can I send photocards separately to save on customs?
Yes, for CIF-basis countries this is a valid strategy. Photocards weigh about 5g each and can be sent cheaply via K-Packet or registered mail. Keeping each shipment under the de minimis threshold legally reduces your tax burden. However, splitting a single purchase into many packages specifically to evade customs may be seen as circumvention — keep it reasonable.
Why is this calculator estimate sometimes lower than what I actually paid?
This calculator is a minimum estimate. It does not include postal handling fees (CAD $8–40 in Canada, EUR 10–20 in some EU countries), luxury goods taxes, state or provincial taxes (e.g., Canada HST beyond GST), or brokerage fees from courier companies like DHL or FedEx. Add a 10–20% buffer to the estimate for a more realistic total.
Is it legal to ask the seller to declare a lower value?
No. Asking a seller to understate the value on customs documentation is customs fraud in both the sending and receiving country. Many customs agencies now use data analytics and price benchmarks to flag suspicious K-pop packages. Penalties can include seizure of goods and fines. Do not do this.
Which country is cheapest for importing K-pop goods?
The USA is by far the most favorable — $800 FOB de minimis with no federal VAT means most fans pay zero import taxes. Japan is next for single-item purchases under JPY 10,000 (with 0% duty). For EU fans, France and Germany face VAT on all purchases but no duty under EUR 150. Brazil, Indonesia, and Canada are generally the most expensive due to low thresholds and high combined tax rates.
How often do these rules change?
Customs rules change regularly. The EU abolished its EUR 22 VAT exemption in 2021. Singapore removed its SGD 400 de minimis in 2023. The US has maintained its $800 threshold since 2016 but there have been legislative proposals to lower it. Australia dropped its AUD 1,000 de minimis in 2018. Always check the official customs website of your country for the most current rules.
